· The Lichens of Great Britain and Ireland. Smith, C.W. et. al. (Eds.). 2009.This is the standard definitive reference and is newly revised and extended in 2009. It is a hefty tome (1046 pages) and rather expensive (£52 to members of the BLS, £72 to non-members) but essential for anyone with a serious long-term interest in lichenology.
· Lichens: An Illustrated Guide to the British and Irish Species. Dobson, F.S. 5th Edition 2005. A very accessible introductory text with descriptions and colour photos of over 700 species. Also useful background on the biology and ecology of lichens, and identification keys.
· Lichen Ecology. Seaward, M.R.D. (Ed.), 1977. Although published some years ago and long out of print, this is still a mine of useful information. Second-hand copies can still be obtained and it is worth a search on the Internet.
· Lichens (Collins New Naturalist Series). Gilbert, O.L., 2000. A very readable and engaging book, ranging over all aspects of British lichens.
· Lichens. Purvis, W., 2000. This is a short (112 pages), well-illustrated introductory booklet published by the Natural History Museum dealing with lichen biology, evolution, ecology, uses etc.
· Die Flechten Baden-Wurttembergs. Wirth, V., 2nd Edition 1995. Written in German this is essentially a lichen flora of the Baden-Wurttemberg area. Useful to the non German-speaker for it's excellent colout photographs. Expensive! (over £100).
· Cladonia: A Field Guide. Hodgetts, N.G. 1992. A very useful, clear and easy to follow key to this large and sometimes confusing group of lichens.
· Lichens on Trees: A Guide to Some of the Commonest Species. Orange, A., 1994. A pocket guide with good photographs and excellent drawings illustrating characters useful for identification. Out of print but available second-hand.
· Lichen Habitat Management. Fletcher, A. (Ed)., 2001. Proceedings of a workshop held in Bangor in 1997
